Northern Thailand is home to many tribal groups. These groups remain secluded, poor and without hope, especially hope of eternal life with God. The tribal groups of Northern Thailand typically live in mountainous regions, surviving by subsistence farming. These tribal groups have been displaced from difficult situations in countries such as Burma, Laos and China to settle in Thailand. All of these groups share many needs and problems, to which the Hilltribe Team of Northern Thailand seeks to minister.

Many Projects are now operating that seek to minister holistically to the needs of the tribal peoples on north Thailand.

Drug Rehabilitation Ministry
We are now conducting drug rehabilitation in Chiang Rai with the Akha people and in Nan with Hmong and other people groups. This ministry has helped redeem the lives of many hundreds of drug addicted people and has started many churches and new groups of believers among tribal peoples. Short term medical, counseling and evangelism volunteers are needed to help with all or part of the 21 day program.

Chiangklang Baptist Clinic, Nan
Both tribal and northern Thai patients now frequent the newly opened clinic in northern Nan province near the border with Lao. A general medical clinic seeking to provide holistic care with a priority for evangelism that results in Churches. Both short term and long term personnel are needed to help at the clinic. Medical students, residents and other volunteers have had opportunities to treat and minister to the lovely peoples of Nan province.

Mobile Medical Clinics
Following in Jesus' steps, one of our most successful evangelism methods is the Mobile Clinic. After a day of helping the sick and lame, an evening of testimonies and skits and movies follows. We sleep in tents in the villages and hold fun programs for the children while the doctors and nurses work. Return visits find those who accepted Jesus' message of hope and salvation and new Churches begin.

How you can be involved

  • Adopt a hilltribe people group (Mien-Yao, Hmong, Akha, Lua)
  • Support the Lottie Moon Christmas offering and cooperative giving at your Church
  • Come on a short term medical or rehab team
  • Sponsor a child at a Christian Dorm
  • Come as a short term, ISC or career missionary on the Hilltribe team: We have requests for medical people, leadership trainers, ESL and dorm ministry folks, coordinators and counselors for drug rehab and others as well

Handicrafts
Thai Country Trim employs Hmong, Akha and Mien women to use centuries old forms of embroidery to decorate bookcovers. We help them market their wares so that they have an alternative income to poppy cultivation and opium trade in the Golden Triangle. Within these groups, we begin bible studies and have seen new churches begun as well.

Dorm Ministry
Over 200 hilltribe children learn about Jesus through dormitories, which allow them to continue their education past the sixth grade level available in their villages. This is an excellent opportunity to disciple young believers in their new faith. Without this ministry, many of these young people would become involved in drug trade or prostitution. We have now seen several go on to ministry leadership positions from the dorm.
